About

Abbey Sobelman is a third-year student at Northern Arizona University (NAU) pursuing dual degrees in communication studies and journalism with a minor in public relations.

She is a lifestyle section editor for the Lumberjack, NAU's student-run newspaper. On the Lumberjack, she covers university-sponsored and local events, pop-culture, concerts and new music, TV shows and movies. As section editor, Abbey is responsible for the smooth and seamless functioning of editorial operations. She generates story topics, assigns stories to reporters, edits stories and is responsible for maintaining communication channels between reporters, photographers, illustrators, editors and the executive board.

Abbey has worked on KJACK Radio, NAU's student-run radio station, since her first semester of college. Previously, she staffed the station’s promotions department and helped planned station-sponsored events such as open mic nights, local shows, Battle of the Bands competitions and Tiny Desk concerts. She promoted the station by creating social media posts, announcements and flyers, and by tabling at university-sponsored and local events. She also worked for the KJACK’s music department where she reviewed new music and concerts, photographed shows, interviewed musicians and helped choose what music is played on the station. Now, she manages the website department, ensuring the station's branding is consistent and information is regularly updated in order to attract both listeners and staffers.

Abbey works for NAU’s Advancement Foundation as a communications and social media assistant and produces text posts, photographs, graphics and short-form videos for the their alumni Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn platforms.

In her free time, Abbey can be found at a concert, in the local cinema or traveling. She has visited 31 states, 16 countries and 3 continents and studied abroad three times.

She is extremely passionate about music, film, journalism and travel and hopes to forge a career that combines these interests.
